WOYWW 381 - what a week

My journal for September involves using Tyvek - and acrylic inks to 'dye' it.  I did some 'happy shopping' and bought a selection of colours, including my new favourite, Copper (I have copper in most mediums now!).  I have dyed both sides of the Tyvek (which I bought on Amazon - lots of different weights available) - just squirted random ink on and moved it around with a foam brush.  You have to work fast, as it sinks in.  Hopefully by next week I will have at least a prototype journal to show you.

My health has taken over my life even more than usual this week.  I went into a flare after having my mum to stay and driving the car too much and then I decided to finally go cold turkey and stop taking my codeine tablets.  They were less efficient in actually reducing my pain levels and I was aware that I was going into withdrawal symptoms if I didn't take them regularly.  So, last Thursday evening was my last tablet.  Withdrawal was and continues to be fairly horrible - but I am over the worst now and I am pleased to report that my pain levels are no worse generally.  Each day seems to bring another withdrawal symptom, ie sneezing one day, cough the next and then yesterday my hip flared up.  Today has seen me mostly lying on the sofa watching tv with my heated blanket - I am either freezing cold or far too hot at the moment.  I am told that I should be over the majority of the symptoms by Day 13 or 14, and I am on Day 6 at the moment.  I have only wanted a codeine fix a couple of times, but now I understand how difficult it is to be addicted to something.

My next step in a couple of weeks is to start thinking about what I can do differently to cope with my pain etc without codeine.  I am already taking some new supplements, so hopefully 2017 will be a better year for me.

Happy WOYWW to those I do not manage to visit (I only seem to have the energy to get on the computer for very limited time).

Ali x

  1. So glad to see you are crafting, but dealing with pain is very hard. I have sciatica and found that healing yoga every day helps so much--I hope you feel better! Happy Wednesday. Sandy Leigh #30

  4. I hope you get the pain under control. Good for you for noticing that you were becoming too dependent on them. You can get through this! You're almost there!

Interesting use for tyvek. I haven't tried painting on it before. Interesting to see the results.

  5. A very interesting post for me especially. I have been taking codeine (co-codamol) for a long time now and u until this latest bout of back pain have really tried not to take anywhere near the maximum dose. My heart goes out to you and I hope you can get through to the end. I will include you in prayer.

  6. Oh Ali I am so sorry to hear about the pain meds issue. I went through a withdrawal from all meds last year and I was pitiful for a couple weeks. I couldn't understand why I kept paying $400 a month for medications that didn't work for me. I could buy and do buy crafty goodness with it! I occasionally take a hydrocodone but it is for my knee or back not my fibro pains. I have a doctors appointment with a pain management doctor Oct. 4 to see about getting an injection in my back that might help all the leg and back pain. I hope it lasts longer then the knee injection from 2 weeks ago because it is already gone! Oh well we do the best we can do. If I can only get relief from an occasional drug then I can handle that! I love fall and Halloween so tend to make and do a lot of stuff just for the fun of it and for me. I used to do it all for the kids but they got older and moved out and my husband could careless about it. I decided years ago I would do it just for me! I am worth it. Grandkids make it better but they live so far away I end up shipping it to them to make sure they have it too! Hope you week gets better. Hang in there. Email me if you like. Thanks for visiting my desk earlier. Vickie #4

  8. Hi Ali, Looking forward to seeing how your journal comes along.

Sorry you have had a flare up. My Fibromyalgia is worse with the cooler wet days 3we have had recently. You hang in there with stopping the Codeine.

I use a Tens, heat pad, sonic device and magnetic device. The Tens and heatpad are the two things that work the best for me.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  13. So sorry to hear how much you have been suffering, Ali, but well done getting off the codeine! Art is the best therapy for taking one's mind off pain... I've been massively overdoing things of late and have had three bad ME days this week so need to take that as a warning, but the trouble is I am so busy at the moment - smething I have not been used to for a long time. Suddenly I am really needing a diary - the only thing that was in it last year was hospital appointments, but now there's so much lovely stuff going on, and it's hard to remember all those pacing lessons I learnt so long ago!

The ink on the Tyvek is great. Have you tried melting Tyvek yet? That is 100% fun. Also, you can buy large-sized Tyvek envelopes really cheap on Ebay and cut them up. It takes acrylic paint really well, and also it cuts on an electronic cutting machine like butter, but I did jam a punch with it once - I don't recommend this! Google Carolyn Saxby to see what absolutely fabulous beads she makes out of Tyvek.

I hope you feel a lot better soon. My heart goes out to you, feeling so poorly.

    Hugs and happy WOYWW,

  16. Enjoyed seeing your Tyvek. I have went back and played catchup on your posts of pain and illness. Life here has been a constant summer of off the wall things. Seems I've hardly had any time for crafting. I Thought with fall in our midst things would change, but so far only funerals and now my mother fell and is in therapy at the nursing home. On another note, I refuse to take meds. I've tried wonderful Epsom salt baths, the essential oils, even got a diffuser to use, drinking hot lemon every morning, gave up soda/sugars, so have made several kinds of lemon/cucumber/berry waters or detox drinks. Seems I have a craving for vinegar/honey drinks also. I only take Advil as nothing else helps my pain, but I limit that. I wish you success in finding relief, keep busy with the slow activities to keep your mind focused on "happy things".

  17. Loving the colours in your background.
Survived the dentist although the numbness took ages to go and then I had to go sort an oil leak from car, really didn't need that when all I wanted to do was sleep!

  18. Sorry to hear about your flair-up, Ali. I sometimes take codeine when paracetamol alone doesn't even touch my migraines. I know it has a warning about addiction, but usually one dose takes care of it for me. Hope you'll get it sorted - it's not healthy being addicted to anything. Great play with the tyvek. I have a few sheets somewhere but have never used them for anything. I bought them just in case I might need them. Of course, now I don't know where they are, LOL. Enjoy the rest of your week. zsuzsa #24

  19. What an interesting technique with the tyvex. It's not a material I've ever worked with, so I'm looking forward to seeing your results.
As for your health, I do hope the withdrawal symptoms do start to slack off for you. It always seems so unfair that doing something for the best for yourself ends up making you feel so horrible. Sending you happy, healing thoughts!

  20. Wow, Ali, that's a massive change of thinking and requires a lot of bloody minded resilience - good for you. It's now Day 7 and I hope you haven't experienced a seventh new withdrawal symptom. Hugely impressed by your will power, really hope you can find an alternative to suit you. Really like the Tyvek idea, I used to work in print and we always used to moan about printing Tyvek because it sucked up so much ink. Having said that, your proposed journal cover is going to have the most amazingly intense colours!

  21. Oh Ali that Tyvek is fascinating. i have never ever heard of it before.. very impressive fun for your desk.

Am ever so sorry life is not fun as far as health goes, pain killers can be a major issue, I cant take most of them including codeine they make me throw up. So I have to just sit things out as best I can in day and take one at night of one of the ones I best tolerate at that time.. you are not the first person I know to have these issues and pray that things are on the up for you, from hereon in.

  23. so sorry to hear from your health issues, we don't realize how lucky we are if we are healthy, it is only when we are ill we truly realize the blessing. I hope that you are totally kicked off the codeine tablets. Love the start of your journal. very very late, WOYWW Vicky By the way, the blackboard is just a cheap one from Ikea.
